The Mount Coot-Tha Botanic Gardens are home to many fantastic works of art. One of my personal favourites in the sculpture titled “The Butterfly Catchers”. It’s from a series titled “The Human Factor” and was created by Brisbane's Artbusters in the late 1980s. The first iterations of the series were installed throughout the World Expo '88 site. The figures in the Botanic Gardens today are re-casts and re-imaginings for the 30th anniversary of Expo.
I painted this en plein air, and made the process into a video that I posted to my Youtube channel. And to accompany this painting I wrote a short poem:
The butterfly catchers must work fast
To catch a moment that will not last
Borne on flittering wings and minutes past
Before nature consumes them
